Euro Tour probes attack near Turkey event site

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are over, but the European Tour has yet to play its three-tournament, season-ending Final Series. The first event of that series, the Turkish Airlines Open, is now in question in the wake of reported rocket attacks in the region where the event is to be played.

On Friday, two rockets were fired in Antalya, a popular vacation resort in the southern part of Turkey, according to the Dogan news agency via Reuters. The rockets wre believed to have been aimed at a fuel truck, but instead they hit a fishing company's shop. There were no casualties.

The European Tour issued a statement at the British Masters saying it was "investigating today's incident ... with our security consultants and local authorities. We will update further as soon as possible."

The Turkish Open is scheduled to be played Nov. 3-6 in Antalya. Among those scheduled to compete is world No. 3 Rory McIlroy. Tiger Woods had announced his intention to play the tournament as well, but changed his mind when he decided not to play the PGA Tour's Safeway Open, either.

According to Reuters, it was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, but Kurdish and far-left militants have staged similar attacks, mostly against security forces.

In August, three Turkish soldiers were wounded in an attack on their vehicle near Antalya.

Tourism in Turkey has been hurt by bombings, a failed coup attempt in July and tensions with Russia.
