Travel tips & advice: What to do on a four-week trip that takes in Moscow and St Petersburg, Prague and Vienna

If you find it not to your liking, it's a long time to be stuck on board.

My husband and I are planning a four-week trip to Moscow and St Petersburg then on to Prague and Vienna. Thinking of a Volga cruise but never cruised before and my husband is reluctant. Any suggestions, including airline options? B. Simmonds, Ascot Vale

If you've never cruised before I wouldn't be doing it in Russia. There are some incredible sights to see on the river trip between Moscow and St Petersburg but this is a two-week cruise. If you find it not to your liking, that's a long time to be stuck on board. River cruising is very different from sea cruises and your Europe journey might be a great opportunity for you to try it. Four weeks is rather long for the cities you have in mind and you could certainly squeeze in a one-week river cruise. For example, Utracks (www.utracks.com) has an 8-day barge and bike trip from Prague and along the Elbe, which could be a great variation in your itinerary.

Travelling in Russia is not as straightforward as in European countries and I'd be arranging travel there through a Russia specialist, such as Eastern Europe Travel Bureau (www.eetbtravel.com/).

You can fly straight into Moscow on a one-stop flight with one of the high quality Middle Eastern carriers. If you plan to end your trip in Vienna the same airline could get you back home on a one-stop flight.
