Are you sure you have a non exchangeable ticket ? Some Renfe tickets can't be refunded but can be exchanged for a different time / date for a fee.

If you have the rock bottom fare promo non flexible ticket then unfortunately there is little that be done.

See if you can try exchanging the ticket as opposed to getting a refund.

When I travel in Spain I use the Loco2 website it's very easy to use.
